How to get your software up and running with a smart system
The world’s biggest software companies have spent billions of dollars on software that enables the data that they collect to be stored and accessed in the cloud.
But in recent years, as they’ve increasingly integrated the tools and technologies that drive these big data services, they’ve started to face questions about how much control they have over how their data is used and used by their users.
To find out more, TIME asked some of the world’s top tech executives for their answers to questions about the power of smart systems and what you can do to help your company succeed in a world where data is king.
“If you’re doing it right, you can build a data warehouse,” says Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO.
“It’s not just data storage.”
Cook’s response to our question about data warehouses is a nod to the fact that while there’s certainly a lot of value to having a large, data-driven enterprise, he thinks it’s also important to take some care when you make it.
“We’re always trying to make our products as small and efficient as possible,” he says.
“You have to balance that with the need to make sure the data is accurate and the right thing to do.”
Cook says he is aware of the data warehouse question, but says he’s never made the mistake of building his own data warehouse.
“I know what I do and I’m not trying to build my own data storage facility,” he tells TIME.
“When you’re building a big data warehouse, you have to know what you’re going to store.
And you have a lot more control over that than if you’re just using an application like Dropbox or Amazon S3.”
Apple is working on a new system that allows data to be uploaded and stored in real time.
It’s called Apple Map, and it lets customers easily manage and manage their personal data from their mobile devices.
For instance, you could let Apple Map show you what’s in your Dropbox account, what’s on your Google Drive account, and so on.
And it can even let you search the data and track changes over time.
You can even see how your personal data is being used, what you’ve uploaded to it, and where it’s stored.
Cook also points out that Apple Map can be used to track a company’s sales, which is very important for large companies that sell a lot.
“The way Apple Map works is, it shows you what your customers are doing, what their transactions are, what they’ve uploaded, and they’ve saved,” Cook says.
He points out there are other services that can track that kind of information, but Apple Map is built to be a powerful tool for businesses.
“There’s a lot you can track,” he adds.
“And if you want to build a really big data center, you want a way to get all of that data, all of those transactions, all that data into a single big location, and then you can start working with that data in a lot different ways.”
Cook has built a large-scale data warehouse at Apple, where employees can upload their own files, pull up information on sales, and manage everything from sales transactions to customer feedback.
But he doesn’t have a data center for it yet.
“This is the first one I’m building myself,” he explains.
“Because I want to have control of it, so I’m going to build it myself.”
Cook also notes that Apple is trying to be as transparent about its data warehouse as possible.
“What Apple has built, it’s very open and it’s not like this is something that I can just pull out and put it into my cloud,” he points out.
“In fact, the only thing that I’m ever going to be able to access is my own Apple Maps data.
So the way I’m planning on building this is to not just have my own private data warehouse but also share it with the rest of the company.”
Apple’s data warehouse also allows companies to get the data they need for marketing, customer surveys, customer support, and a host of other purposes.
Apple has also partnered with some of America’s biggest tech companies, including Google, to offer free cloud storage for the entire enterprise.
The cloud also lets Apple store all of its products and services in one place, which can be a useful strategy for companies with multiple data centers.
But as Apple has increasingly been making money off of its data warehouses, some of its competitors have been taking a more pragmatic approach.
For example, in February, Yahoo announced a partnership with Facebook to offer a free cloud service that will give Yahoo customers a free two-year subscription to the company’s cloud storage service.
The Yahoo cloud service is available for both mobile and desktop users, and allows users to download and install a mobile app to view their data and access all their data.
“Yahoo has always been a great partner to us in terms of data and cloud,” says Google’s Matt Weinberger.
“They’ve been a big
